Materials List Yarn: Orange / Mustard Yellow (for the pumpkin body) Brown (for the stem, arms, and leg details) Dark Green (for the leaves and boots) White (for the eye bases and ruffle cuffs) Black (for the boot soles, pupils, eyebrows, and mouth) Crochet Hook: Size suitable for your yarn weight (typically 2.0 mm or 2.5 mm) Safety Eyes: 2 large black safety eyes (or black buttons) Stuffing: Fiberfill / Polyester stuffing Notions: Tapestry needle, scissors, black embroidery thread Detailed Component Patterns & Stitch Counts 1. Main Body (Pumpkin) – Orange / Mustard Yarn The body is worked as a single sphere and then segmented using a shaping thread to create the pumpkin ridges. Round 1: 6 single crochet (sc) in a magic ring. (6 sts) Round 2: 2 sc in each st around (Inc). (12 sts) Round 3: (1 sc, 1 inc) repeat around. (18 sts) Round 4: (2 sc, 1 inc) repeat around. (24 sts) Round 5: (3 sc, 1 inc) repeat around. (30 sts) Expansion Phase: Continue increasing each round (e.g., 4 sc + 1 inc, 5 sc + 1 inc) until the desired diameter is reached. Middle Section: Work even (1 sc in each st) for approximately 35–40 rounds until the desired height is achieved. Decreasing Phase: Reverse the increase pattern to gradually narrow the body (e.g., 5 sc + 1 dec, 4 sc + 1 dec). Stuff firmly before closing the remaining stitches. Shaping the Ridges: Thread a long piece of matching orange yarn through a tapestry needle. Pass the needle from the bottom center to the top center and wrap the yarn around the outside of the sphere, pulling tightly to form deep grooves. Repeat 6 to 8 times around the body to create the pumpkin segments.
2. Eyes (Make 2) – White Yarn Round 1: 6 sc in a magic ring. (6 sts) Round 2: Inc in each st around. (12 sts) Round 3: (1 sc, 1 inc) repeat around. (18 sts) Fasten off with a slip stitch, leaving a long tail for sewing. Insert a black safety eye through the center of each white piece. 3. Nose – Orange Yarn Round 1: 6 sc in a magic ring. (6 sts) Round 2: Inc in each st around. (12 sts) Rounds 3–4: Sc in each st around. (12 sts) Fasten off, add a tiny bit of fiberfill, and pinch/cinch slightly. 4. Leaves (Make 2) – Dark Green Yarn The leaves are worked in ribbed rows or around a central chain: Chain 12. Work back along the chain using a mix of single crochet (sc), half double crochet (hdc), and double crochet (dc) to form the leaf shape. Work down both sides of the chain, adding picot stitches or increases at the tips to create pointed, textured edges. 5. Stem & Vine Tendrils – Brown Yarn Stem: 6 sc in a magic ring. Work in continuous spirals (6 sts) for about 10–12 rounds to create a cylinder. Flare out slightly at the bottom (by increasing) for easy attachment. Curly Tendrils: Chain 20–25. Work 2 or 3 sc into each chain back down. The extra stitches will cause the strip to curl into a tight spiral.
6. Arms & Hands (Make 2) – Brown Yarn Hand: 6 sc in a magic ring. Increase to 9–10 sts and work a few rounds to form a small mitten/hand shape. Arm: Decrease back down to 5–6 sts and continue working straight up in spirals to the desired arm length. Fasten off, leaving a tail for sewing. 7. Boots & Legs (Make 2) Boot Sole (Black Yarn): Chain 8. Work around the foundation chain in an oval (sc along one side, 3 sc in the end chain, sc down the other side). Continue for 2–3 rounds to create an oval sole. Boot Upper (Dark Green Yarn): Join green yarn to the back loops of the sole. Work straight up for 2 rounds, then decrease across the front to shape the toe of the boot. White Cuff Ruffle (White Yarn): Attach white yarn to the top edge of the boot opening. Work (sc, ch 2, sc) or multiple dc in each st to create a ruffled sock cuff. Leg (Brown Yarn): Attach brown yarn inside the boot and work a thin tube (5–6 sts) upward for the leg length.
Assembly & Finishing Face Assembly: Sew the white eye pieces to the upper-middle section of the pumpkin body. Attach the orange nose directly between and slightly below the eyes. Using black embroidery thread, stitch expressive eyebrows above the eyes and a subtle, cheerful smile to the side of the nose. Attaching Limbs: Sew the arms to the sides of the pumpkin body. Secure the legs firmly to the bottom center, ensuring they are spaced evenly so the character can sit or stand balanced. Top Details: Sew the brown stem securely to the top center of the pumpkin. Attach the green leaves and curly vine tendrils right around the base of the stem.
