Materials List Yarn: Cream or ecru cotton macramé yarn or 3–4 mm thick yarn suitable for crochet (for the background lace/placemat base). Brown cotton yarn (for the owl's head, body, and wings). Cream/white cotton yarn (for the eye rings). Mustard yellow or orange yarn (for the beak and feet). Olive/green yarn (for the leaves). Crochet Hook: A hook size appropriate for your chosen yarn (typically 2.5 mm or 3.0 mm). Other Supplies: 2 black amigurumi safety eyes (or black thread/embroidery floss for embroidering the eyes). Tapestry/sewing needle and scissors. A small amount of fiberfill stuffing (optional, if you want to add slight volume to the owl's body). 1. Background (Lace / Placemat Base) The circular background piece is worked using classic lace or mesh crochet techniques. Magic Ring / Foundation Chain: Chain 8 and join with a slip stitch to form a ring. Round 1: Work double crochets (dc) separated by chains into the ring to create a mesh grid. Middle Rounds: Increase the number of double crochets to expand the circle. Scalloped Border: Work shell stitches (clusters of double crochets) and large chain arches around the outer edge to achieve the wavy, lace finish.
2. Owl Parts and Stitch Counts A. Body and Head (Single Piece or Worked Together) Start with brown yarn. Round 1: 6 single crochet (sc) into a magic ring. Round 2: Inc in every st around (12 sc). Round 3: "(1 sc, inc)" repeat around (18 sc). Round 4: "(2 sc, inc)" repeat around (24 sc). Round 5: "(3 sc, inc)" repeat around (30 sc). Rounds 6–12: Sc in each st around (30 sc). Switch to cream yarn for the lower belly section, or embroider the feather accents on the front using cream yarn. Note: The "V"-shaped feather accents on the lower belly are embroidered using a needle with cream or dark brown yarn. B. Eye Rings (Make 2 - White/Cream Yarn) Work 6 sc into a magic ring. Work a round of double crochet or half double crochet stitches around to form a neat, defined circle. Insert black safety eyes into the centers or embroider them with black thread, adding eyelash details on the sides. C. Wings (Make 2 - Brown Yarn) The wings feature a textured, puffy look using bobble/popcorn stitches. Chain 5–6 to start. Work bobble stitches (multiple unfinished double crochets into the same stitch) to create a layered, pinecone/feather texture.
D. Beak and Feet (Mustard / Orange Yarn) Beak: Work 4–5 sc into a magic ring to shape a small triangle. Feet: Make short chains and work single crochets back across to form small claws. E. Branch and Leaves Branch: Using brown yarn, chain to the desired length, then work single crochets across to thicken it. Work small offshoots for twigs. Leaves (Make 3 - Green Yarn): Chain 7, then work a sequence of stitches (sc, hdc, dc, hdc, sc) to create a leaf shape that is wider in the middle and pointed at the ends. 3. Assembly Instructions Preparing the Base: Lay the cream crochet lace base flat on a working surface. Attaching the Branch: Position the brown branch across the lower-middle section of the base with a slight curve, then sew or stitch it in place. Secure the green leaves onto the branch. Placing the Owl: Center the owl's body right above the branch. Secure it to the lace base using hidden stitches around the edges. Facial Features: Sew the two eye rings side-by-side onto the upper part of the head. Attach the black safety eyes/beads in the center and embroider eyelashes on the outer edges using thin black thread. Sew the beak directly below the middle of the eyes. Wings and Feet: Sew the wings onto the sides of the body so they sit slightly raised/puffy. Attach the feet over the branch, right under the bottom of the owl. Once all parts are securely stitched together, your decorative owl wall hanging / placemat is complete!
